Binge Eating Disorder/Compulsive Overeating

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for Binge Eating Disorder is a structured, time-limited, empirically supported treatment that is effective in reducing and/or eliminating binge eating. Emotional triggers and relationship difficulties connected to binge eating are systematically identified and addressed. As individuals are taught specific skills to help in dealing more effectively with negative emotions and relationship problems, they become less likely to use food to cope with their distress. This approach has been shown to be particularly helpful for “stress eaters” and those who have been continuously unsuccessful in their weight loss attempts due to a loss of control over eating.

IPT is conducted in 20 outpatient sessions over a six-month period. The first phase (sessions 1-4) involves identifying the specific problem areas and collaboratively setting treatment goals. In the second phase of treatment (sessions 5-16), individuals cease/reduce binge eating as they actively work on goal areas and are assisted in making specific changes in their lives. The third phase of treatment (sessions 17-20) focuses on setting a plan for maintaining progress, and preparing strategies to avoid future weight gain associated with binge eating
