NEW! DBT
Support Skills Group for Parents, Spouses, & Family Members
The Koch Center is offering an 12
week course that will help family members support their loved one who is
receiving Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) at The Koch Center. This
course will include a section on family skills, including how to
validate a loved one, basic behavioral techniques, and an overview of
how a dialectical approach can improve communication and relationships.
Participants will also receive an overview of all the DBT skills taught
in the skills group:
- Core
Mindfulness: Individuals learn to notice their emotions and to
endure them.
-
Distress Tolerance: Short-term strategies designed to help people
cope during moments of overwhelming distress.
- Affect
Regulation: Enables people to learn how to increase positive
emotions and decrease negative ones.
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Assertiveness and communication skills
are emphasized to improve relationships.
These skills can be used at home.
Skills will also be adapted to help participants learn new strategies to
reinforce healthy coping skills to help family members interact with
loved ones in a new way. At the end of the eight week course, evaluation
and possible referral for additional family training will be made as
necessary.
